Diwali Festival Auckland @ Aotea Square (Series)

Auckland's edition of Diwali Festival of Lights was in fine form for Saturday's solo performances in Aotea Square and Queen St. Appearances from the Indian High Commissioner and the Governor-General featured in the opening ceremony, as well as a marvelous series of performances celebrating Indian culture.

I went back to catch some of the action on Sunday, here's the slideshow:

...and yes, there were a few Paul Henry jokes...

Halloween Party Highlights

My $2 shop costume... complete with add-on and oddly tactile (but eminently useful) ugh... tongue. View high-res | View gallery
If you've ever tried taking photos under a black light, you'll know how hideously difficult this was... nice effect from the contact lenses! View high-res | View gallery
The rather red lighting situation was offset somewhat by opening the fridge door. View high-res | View gallery

Halloween Party @ The Dominion (Series)

The Dominion hosted an entirely scary evening full of severed dolls heads, cobwebs, and diabolical creatures.

Freelensing at the Cat

I learned a new technique on flickr today, called 'freelensing'. View high-res | Shopping cart
Basically, you loosen your lens & hold it in front of the camera, and tilt to focus and adjust your composition as you like. View high-res | Shopping cart
The effect is similar to a dedicated (& expensive) tilt lens, although infinity focus is impossible. View high-res | Shopping cart

Piha - the Sequel (Series)

Sunday afternoon featured a jaunt to Piha to take in some scenery. Crowds of beach goers were enjoying the spring sunshine, and I learned that tripods tend to sink into soft sand when doing long exposures...

Coastal Classic Start @ North Head (Series)

The Coastal Classic start in Auckland's Waitemata Harbour was not to be missed, so I headed up North Head with 510mm of telephoto goodness, and tried my luck for a few photos... Check out the event website for results and commentary.

Orere Point Meanderance

It took ages to scatter all the pebbles and arrange the clouds to match my compositional vision. Still, we must make sacrifices for our art. View high-res | Shopping cart | Gallery
A lot of the trees along the shoreline seemed to be struggling a bit in their life situation. Being a true reporter, I merely took photos and didn't attempt to interfere. View high-res | Shopping cart | Gallery
Colour distracts from texture and composition. View high-res | Shopping cart | Gallery
The shoreline degenerated into an existential crisis of dark rockyness and I couldn't go any further.  View high-res | Shopping cart | Gallery
An elevated view from the reserve, and quite a climb with two cameras + gear. View high-res | Shopping cart | Gallery

Orere Point (Series)

A journey out of Auckland to the East Coast seemed like a nice change from the usual ordinary magnificent desolation that is the West Coast. Orere Point is here, not far from Auckland, and is quite a decent holiday spot.
