Wellingtonicity

1 - some different-ish impressions of Wellington's cityscapes collected from a couple of forays around the outskirts of the CBD.

Lion's Pause

1 - Om Nom Nom Nom Nom

2 - Ohhhhh.... indigestion....

Not Always Windy

1 - Some rather placid Friday night yacht racing... following in the tradition of square cropped photos, check out my cousin Andrew's extraordinary work on his recently updated and relaunched website lookleft.co.nz.

Two Birds (Saddleback & Whitehead)

1 - A New Zealand native Saddleback Philesturnus carunculatus or Tieke at the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary last weekend...

2 - ...and a Whitehead (Mohoua albicilla) or Pōpokotea

Wow, 4 Years

I was just checking the archives, and I see I took my first digital photo 4 years (and 2 days) ago. 150,000 photos later there's still plenty to learn, see, and snap...

RPNYC Sailing Spring Series Race 2

1 - Perfect sailing weather for the final day of the RPNYC's Spring Series. The start was close, with a bunch of yachts clustered at the starboard end of the line

2 - Nedax Racing pulled the old 'tack on to port and dip' trick

3 - The Bluebridge ferry steamed across the fleet as they went up the first beat...

4 - ...which probably didn't help the boats using the right side of the course...

6 - President's Division start

7 - The race was close throughout, here the Farr MRX Bayleys rolls over One Red Dog courtesy of  a slight spinnaker issue...

8 - The two Thompson 30s (Drinks Trolley and Nedax Racing)

9 - ...a bottom mark misadventure for Nedax Racing, but they recovered well...

10 - ...and a close finish for 2nd (after Andiamo) on the line, with Drinks Trolley leading Flying Boat...

11 - ...with The Guarantee only 1 second further back. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th on the line were only 19 seconds apart after an hour of racing. Not too bad...

12 - Bayleys won on divisional handicap, with Andiamo 6s behind, and Flying Circus 3rd. Race and series results are here.

Final Approach

1 - An Air New Zealand Dash 8 wobbling into land at Auckland International Airport last Tuesday. My flight back to Wellington was inconveniently canceled while I was sitting in the departure lounge...

Karim Sahai's 'Yatra' Exhibition

Fellow Wellington photographer Karim Sahai (website/ weblog/ flickr/ photoshelter) is putting on an exhibition of images from a trip around India. Many of Karim's shots exploit extraordinarily shallow depth of field combined with a colour palette and tonal quality that lend an almost surreal quality to the images.

Here's the press release:

YATRA
A Photographic Journey Through India

18-28 October 2008, Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington.

“Yatra” is a word from the ancient Indian Sanskrit language signifying spiritual journey. Through a series of powerful images, Wellington photographer Karim Sahai presents a fascinating journey with an intimate, colorful and often surprising view of life in the world’s second most populous country.

For a preview of the exhibition, visit: http://www.indiaphotojourney.com

“Yatra, A Photographic Journey Through India” was made possible with the support of Canon New Zealand.

Fish (Correct Pronunciation = 'Fush')

1 - A few shots from a short visit to Auckland's Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World, plenty to see, but fish-behind-glass aren't particularly easy to photograph... (And yes, I know the Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydasa) isn't a fish...)
